Our Process

Prior to scanning we carefully clean your materials (only 35mm slides and negatives) with filtered compressed air.

Individual review of each photo to balance color, contrast and sharpness including matching film profiles where possible.

Batching in folders and in an chronological order.

Two levels of service depending on your budget and needs (Economy or Regular scan).

Economy vs. Regular Scan

Both options use the same equipment and produce the same high-quality scans. However,

Regular scanning we perform the following finishing procedures:

Image rotation to the correct orientation
De-skewing (leveling the image)
Cropping any visible border effect
Color correction
Detailed quality check

Economy scanning is a good option if you are proficient with computer multimedia editing software and intend to manipulate and finish the images yourself.

Available Formats

8-bit JPEG (default) (file sizes are in the table below)

16-bit JPEG (files sizes are 2X the 8bit size)

8-bit TIFF (file sizes are in the table below)

16-bit TIFF (files sizes are 2X the 8bit size)

Low compression JPEG (Photoshop quality level 12) with file sizes approximately half that of 8bit TIFF

The options for resolution are:

Standard, High, and Pro (slides & negatives)

Standard Resolution is: Suitable for slide shows, email & web applications, and photo-quality printing without enlargement.

High Resolution is: Best for archiving and enlarged photo-quality printing.   Pro Resolution is for large format printing and high-end graphics work.

Pro resolution is: Relevant for slides and negatives and not for prints - although 1200 dpi resolution is available for prints as well.

Scanned image saved JPEG (default setting), or TIFF, PNG or other requested files Stored on DVD, CD, external hard drive, or on a digital frame/memory card Optional keyword, XMP and custom image tagging for retrieval and archiving.

It may be advantageous to scan at High or Pro resolution even if you don't plan to make enlargements. More resolution gives you reserve should you need to zoom in or enlarge a portion of an image.

Also, note that an image's resolution can easily be reduced, but it can never be increased without rescanning.   For relative file sizes for different resolution, compression levels, and image formats, please refer to the resolution table.

Cleanscan and TruColor

CleanScan uses Digital Ice Technology (developed by Kodak) to automatically remove dust, scratches, fingerprints, and mold without softening, blurring or otherwise affecting any underlying detail of the original image.

TruColor removes color casts and brings back faded colors. This is the default for regular scan and is not available for economy scan. Please indicate if you do not want this service.
